ResumenAbstract

We consider a Riemannian submersion from a 3-manifold \(\mathbb{E}\) to a surface \(M\), both connected and orientable, whose fibers are the integral curves of a Killing vector field without zeros, not necessarily unitary. We solve the Jenkins-Serrin problem for the minimal surface equation in \(\mathbb{E}\) over a relatively compact open domain \(\Omega\subset M\) with prescribed finite or infinite values on some arcs of the boundary under the only assumption that the same value \(+\infty\) or \(-\infty\) cannot be prescribed on two adjacent components of \(\partial\Omega\) forming a convex angle. The domain $\Omega$ can have reentrant corners as well as closed curves in its boundary. We show that the solution exists if and only if some generalized Jenkins-Serrin conditions (in terms of a conformal metric in \(M\)) are fulfilled. We develop further the theory of divergence lines to study the convergence of a sequence of minimal graphs. We also provide maximum principles that guarantee the uniqueness of the solution. Finally, we obtain new examples of minimal surfaces in \(\mathbb{R}^3\) and in other homogeneous 3-manifolds.

ResumenAbstract

We develop a conformal duality for spacelike graphs in Riemannian and Lorentzian three-manifolds that admit a Riemannian submersion over a Riemannian surface whose fibers are the integral curves of a Killing vector field, which is timelike in the Lorentzian case. The duality swaps mean curvature and bundle curvature and sends the length of the Killing vector field to its reciprocal while keeping invariant the base surface. We obtain two consequences of this result. On the one hand, we find entire graphs in Lorentz--Minkowski space $\mathbb{L}^3$ with prescribed mean curvature a bounded function $H\in\mathcal{C}^\infty(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with bounded gradient. On the other hand, we obtain conditions for existence and non existence of entire graphs which are related to a notion of critical mean curvature in the context of Killing submersions.

ResumenAbstract

We consider constant mean curvature surfaces (invariant by a continuous group of isometries) lying at bounded distance from a horizontal geodesic on any homogeneous $3$-manifold $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$ with isometry group of dimension $4$. These surfaces are called horizontal tubes. We show that they foliate $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$ minus one or two horizontal geodesics if and only if $(1-x_0^2)\kappa+4\tau^2\leq 0$, where $x_0\approx 0.833557$. We also describe precisely how horizontal and vertical geodesics get deformed by Daniel's sister correspondence and conclude that the family of horizontal tubes is preserved by the correspondence. These tubes are topologically tori in Berger spheres, in which case we compute their conformal type and analyze numerically their isoperimetric profiles.

ResumenAbstract

For each $k\geq 3$, we construct a 1-parameter family of complete Alexandrov-embedded minimal surfaces in the Riemannian product space $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ with genus $1$ and $k$ embedded ends asymptotic to vertical planes. We also obtain complete minimal surfaces with genus $1$ and $2k$ ends in the quotient of $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ by an arbitrary vertical translation. They all have dihedral symmetry with respect to $k$ vertical planes, as well as finite total curvature $-4k\pi$. Finally, we provide examples of complete properly embedded minimal surfaces with infinitely many ends, each of them asymptotic to a vertical plane and with finite total curvature.

ResumenAbstract

We obtain a $1$-parameter family of horizontal Delaunay surfaces with positive constant mean curvature in $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$, being the mean curvature larger than $\frac{1}{2}$ in the latter case. These surfaces are not equivariant but singly periodic, lie at bounded distance from a horizontal geodesic, and complete the family of horizontal unduloids previously given by the authors. We study in detail the geometry of the whole family and show that horizontal unduloids are properly embedded in $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb{R}$. We also find (among unduloids) families of embedded constant mean curvature tori in $\mathbb S^2\times\mathbb{R}$ which are continuous deformations from a stack of tangent spheres to a horizontal invariant cylinder. In particular, we find the first non-equivariant examples of embedded tori in $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$, which have constant mean curvature $H>\frac12$. Finally, we prove that there are no properly immersed surface with constant mean curvature $H\leq\frac{1}{2}$ at bounded distance from a horizontal geodesic in $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$.

ResumenAbstract

We show the existence of a $2$-parameter family of properly Alexandrov-embedded surfaces with constant mean curvature $0\lt H\leq\frac{1}{2}$ in $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb{R}$. They are symmetric with respect to a horizontal slice and a $k$ vertical planes disposed symmetrically, and extend the so called minimal saddle towers and $k$-noids. We show that the orientation plays a fundamental role when the mean curvature is positive via the sister conjugate minimal surface from $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})$ or $\mathrm{Nil}_3$. We also discover new complete examples that we call $(H,k)$-nodoids, whose $k$ ends are asymptotic to vertical cylinders from the convex side, often giving rise to non-embedded examples. In the discussion of embeddedness, we prove that the Krust property does not hold for any $H>0$, i.e., there are minimal graphs over convex domains in $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{Nil}_3$ or the Berger spheres, whose sister conjugate surfaces with constant mean curvature $H$ in $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb{R}$ are not graphs.

We obtain compact orientable embedded surfaces with constant mean curvature $0\lt H\lt\frac{1}{2}$ and arbitrary genus in $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$. These surfaces have dihedral symmetry and desingularize a pair of spheres with mean curvature $\frac{1}{2}$ tangent along an equator. This is a particular case of a conjugate Plateau construction of doubly periodic surfaces with constant mean curvature in $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$, $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$, and $\mathbb{R}^3$ with bounded height and enjoying the symmetries of certain tessellations of $\mathbb{S}^2$, $\mathbb{H}^2$, and $\mathbb{R}^2$ by regular polygons.

ResumenAbstract

Extending Calabi's correspondence between minimal graphs in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$ and maximal graphs in the Lorentz-Minkowski spacetime $\mathbb{L}^3$ to a wide class of 3-manifolds carrying a unit Killing vector field, we construct a twin correspondence between graphs with prescribed mean curvature $H$ in the Riemannian Generalized Bianchi-Cartan-Vranceanu (GBCV) space $\mathbb{E}^3(M,\tau)$ and spacelike graphs with prescribed mean curvature $\tau$ in the GBCV spacetime $\mathbb{L}^{3}(M, H)$. For instance, the prescribed mean curvature equation in $\mathbb{L}^3$ can be transformed into the minimal surface equation in the generalized Heisenberg space with prescribed bundle curvature. We present several applications of the twin correspondence and study the moduli space of complete spacelike surfaces in the GBCV spacetimes.

ResumenAbstract

We define holomorphic quadratic differentials for spacelike surfaces with constant mean curvature in the Lorentzian homogeneous spaces $\mathbb{L}(\kappa,H)$ with isometry group of dimension 4, which are dual to the Abresch-Rosenberg differentials in the Riemannian counterparts $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$, and obtain some consequences. On the one hand, we classify explicitly those surfaces in $\mathbb{L}(\kappa,\tau)$ with zero differential. On the other hand, we prove that entire minimal graphs in Heisenberg space have negative Gauss curvature.

ResumenAbstract

We obtain area growth estimates for constant mean curvature graphs in $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$-spaces with $\kappa\leq 0$, by finding sharp upper bounds for the volume of geodesic balls in $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$. We focus on complete graphs and graphs with zero boundary values. For instance, we prove that entire graphs in $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$ with critical mean curvature have at most cubic intrinsic area growth, or minimal graphs in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with zero boundary values over an arbitrary domain have at most quadratic area growth. We also obtain relations between height and area growth of minimal graphs in the Heisenberg space ($\kappa=0$), and prove a Collin-Krust type estimate for such minimal graphs.

ResumenAbstract

A Killing submersion is a Riemannian submersion from a 3-manifold to a surface, both connected and orientable, whose fibres are the integral curves of a Killing vector field, not necessarily unitary. The first part of this paper deals with the classification of all Killing submersions in terms of two geometric functions, namely the bundle curvature and the length of the Killing vector field, which can be prescribed arbitrarily. In a second part, we show that if the base is compact and the submersion admits a global section, then it also admits a global minimal section. These turn out to be the only global sections with constant mean curvature, which solves the Bernstein problem in Killing submersions over compact base surfaces, as well as the Plateau problem with empty boundary. Finally, we prove that any compact orientable stable surface with constant mean curvature immersed in the total space of a Killing submersion must be either an entire minimal section or everywhere tangent to the Killing direction.

We prove that closed surfaces of all topological types, except for the non-orientable odd-genus ones, can be minimally embedded in the Riemannian product of a sphere and a circle of arbitrary radius. We illustrate it by obtaining some periodic minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ via conjugate constructions. The resulting surfaces can be seen as the analogy to the Schwarz P-surface in these homogeneous 3-manifolds.

We obtain an exhaustive classification of totally umbilical surfaces in unimodular and non-unimodular simply-connected 3-dimensional Lie groups endowed with arbitrary left-invariant Riemannian metrics. This completes the classification of totally umbilical surfaces in homogeneous Riemannian 3-manifolds.

ResumenAbstract

We prove that any complete surface with constant mean curvature in a homogeneous space $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$ which is transversal to the vertical Killing vector field is, in fact, a vertical graph. As a consequence we get that any orientable, parabolic, complete, immersed surface with constant mean curvature $H$ in $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$ (different from a horizontal slice in $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$) is either a vertical cylinder or a vertical graph (in both cases, it must be $4H^2+\kappa\leq 0$).

ResumenAbstract

We construct non-zero constant mean curvature $H$ surfaces in the product spaces $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ by using suitable conjugate Plateau constructions. The resulting surfaces are complete, have bounded height and are invariant under a discrete group of horizontal translations. In $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ (for any $H>0$) or $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ (for $H>1/2$), a 1-parameter family of unduloid-type surfaces is obtained, some of which are shown to be compact in $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$. Finally, in the case of $H=1/2$ in $\mathbb{H}^2 \times\mathbb{R}$, the constructed examples have the symmetries of a tessellation of $\mathbb{H}^2$ by regular polygons.

ResumenAbstract

A Killing submersion is a Riemannian submersion from an orientable 3-manifold to an orientable surface whose fibers are the integral curves of a unit Killing vector field in the 3-manifold. We classify all Killing submersions over simply-connected Riemannian surfaces and give explicit models for many Killing submersions including those over simply-connected constant Gaussian curvature surfaces. We also fully describe the isometries of the total space preserving the vertical direction. As a consequence, we prove that the only simply-connected homogeneous 3-manifolds which admit a structure of Killing submersion are the $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$-spaces, whose isometry group has dimension at least 4.

ResumenAbstract

We will discuss some sharp estimates for CMC graphs in a Riemannian 3-manifold $M\times\mathbb{R}$ whose boundary is contained in a slice. We will start by giving sharp lower bounds for the geodesic curvature of the boundary and improve these bounds when assuming additional restrictions on the maximum height that such a surface reaches in $M\times\mathbb{R}$. We will also give a lower bound for the distance from an interior point to the boundary in terms of the height at that point, and characterize when these bounds are attained.

Erratum

ResumenAbstract

We prove that if $u$ is a bounded smooth function in the kernel of a nonnegative Schrödinger operator $-L=-(\Delta+q)$ on a parabolic Riemannian manifold $M$, then $u$ is either identically zero or it has no zeros on $M$, and the linear space of such functions is 1-dimensional. We obtain consequences for orientable, complete stable surfaces with constant mean curvature $H\in\mathbb{R}$ in homogeneous spaces with 4-dimensional isometry group. For instance, if $M$ is an orientable, parabolic, complete immersed surface with constant mean curvature $H$ in $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$, then $|H|\leq\frac{1}{2}$ and if equality holds, then $M$ is either an entire graph or a vertical horocylinder.

Erratum

Theorem 3 contains a mistake which is corrected in Height and area estimates for constant mean curvature graphs in $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$-spaces. The corrected statement is the following:

Let $M\subset\mathrm{Nil}_3$ be a complete minimal horizontal multigraph. If $M$ is parabolic, then it is either a vertical plane, or one of Figueroa, Mercuri and Pedrosa's invariant minimal surfaces.

ResumenAbstract

This survey paper investigates, from a purely geometric point of view, Daniel's isometric conjugation between minimal and constant mean curvature surfaces immersed in homogeneous Riemannian three-manifolds with isometry group of dimension four. On the one hand, we collect the results and strategies in the literature that have been developed so far to deal with the analysis of conjugate surfaces and their embeddedness. On the other hand, we revisit some constructions of constant mean curvature surfaces in the homogeneous product spaces $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$, $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{R}^3$ having different topologies and geometric properties depending on the value of the mean curvature. Finally, we also provide some numerical pictures using Surface Evolver.

ResumenAbstract

The main aim of this survey paper is to gather together some results concerning the Calabi type duality discovered by Hojoo Lee between certain families of (spacelike) graphs with constant mean curvature in Riemannian and Lorentzian homogeneous 3-manifolds with isometry group of dimension 4. The duality is conformal and swaps mean curvature and bundle curvature, and we will revisit it by giving a more general statement in terms of conformal immersions. This will show that some features in the theory of surfaces with mean curvature 1/2 in $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ or minimal surfaces in the Heisenberg space have nice geometric interpretations in terms of their dual Lorentzian counterparts. We will briefly discuss some applications such as gradient estimates for entire minimal graphs in Heisenberg space or the existence of complete spacelike surfaces, and we will also give an uniform treatment to the behavior of the duality with respect to ambient isometries. Finally, some open questions are posed in the last section.

ResumenAbstract

We survey different classification results for surfaces with parallel mean curvature immersed into some Riemannian homogeneous four-manifolds, including real and complex space forms and product spaces. We provide a common framework for this problem, with special attention to the existence of holomorphic quadratic differentials on such surfaces. The case of spheres with parallel mean curvature is also explained in detail, as well as the state-of-the-art advances in the general problem.
